Frequently Asked Questions - FAQ
Is the treatment covered by health insurance, or is a reimbursement available?
As of January 1, 2024, clinical psychological treatment has been incorporated into the General Social Insurance Act, making a subsidy finally possible. This requires the presence of a mental illness (either a pre-existing diagnosis or one made by me) and a medical examination, confirmed through a form. The medical confirmation must be provided before the second clinical psychological session. Further information can be found here.
It is also possible to bill through private insurance, if applicable. I recommend contacting your insurance provider to clarify this beforehand.
What is Clinical Psychology?
Clinical Psychology is a branch of psychology that deals with the counselling, treatment, and diagnosis of mental disorders, as well as physical disorders with an underlying psychological component.
What is the difference between a Psychiatrist, Psychologist, Clinical Psychologist, and Psychotherapist?
The professions of psychiatrists, psychologists, clinical psychologists, and psychotherapists overlap in their focus on supporting individuals with mental health challenges but differ in their education and methods.
- Psychiatrists are specialized doctors who have completed medical studies and speciality training. They are the only ones authorized to prescribe medications.
- Psychologists have completed a degree in psychology.
- Clinical Psychologists have completed additional, multi-year postgraduate theoretical and practical training in Clinical Psychology, focusing on the treatment of mental disorders. They work across methods and follow scientific standards.
- Psychotherapists complete both theoretical and practical psychotherapy training (Introductory Course and Specialized Training), which can be started at the age of 24, even without a university degree. Psychotherapists choose a legally recognized method (often referred to as a "school") during their training and align their work accordingly.
How many sessions will I need?
There is no general answer to this, as the number of required sessions depends heavily on the specific issue.
What should I do if I can't attend my appointment?
You can cancel via SMS or phone call up to 24 hours before the scheduled appointment. For cancellations after this period or for no-shows, the full fee will be charged.
Are Clinical Psychologists bound by confidentiality?
Yes, Clinical Psychologists are legally bound to confidentiality (§ 37 of the Psychology Act). This obligation protects the trust that is essential for successful treatment between clinical psychologists and clients.
Further information on confidentiality can be found on the website of the Federal Ministry of Social Affairs, Health, Care, and Consumer Protection.
